Time-of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD) Probes for Crack Detection and Sizing
TOFD probes equipped with wedges generate refracted longitudinal waves in steel, utilizing the Time-of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD) technique to locate and siz e defects such as cracks.
When ultrasonic waves encounter defects or interfaces between different medium within a material, diffraction occurs, altering the wave's propagation path and time. By measuring the time difference between the transmission and reception of the ultrasonic waves, the location and size of the defect can be determined.
Advantages:
When paired with a wedge, the TOFD probe generates refracted longitudinal waves in the workpiece. Cracks and other flaws can be accurately sized through Time-of-Flight diffraction technique.
